On Sunday our Men’s Team defeated Surfside 3-2 in a tight finish. GeelongSC is now in 3rd place on the Ladder, only goal difference seperating them from 2nd place.
The match began with Geelong on the offensive. Goalscoring chances were created and missed by the minute. There was a heavy mud patch in front of the Surfside goal which became a common excuse for our forwards’ misses. Against the run of play, Surfside took the lead in the 15th minute when coach Georgi turned the ball over in defence allowing and the Surfside boys to cross and then head the ball past keeper Shayka.
Geelong replied shortly after from a trademark Georgi free-kick goal. Uki won the free-kick on the left outside the box. Georgi cooly struck his kick to the keeper side of the wall while the Surfside keeper moved toward the center of goal. The Geelong onslaught continued with Becker, Robbi, Docter Dean, Georgi, Costa all getting good scoring opportunities. It was coach Georgi that broke the deadlock with his 2nd for the match, this time converting from the penalty spot after Costa was chopped in the box. The half finished with Geelong leading 2-1 when the score could have looked more like a cricket score.
The second half saw our forwards create and miss chances at the dry end of the field. Eventually Becker extended Geelong’s lead when he scored from close range, planting his shot firmly into Surfside’s side-netting.
Late in the match Surfside began to apply pressure on the Geelong goal and they were rewarded with a second goal when they converted from a goalmouth scramble. Surside’s goal created for a very tense finish to the match. Surfside continued to push forward coming close to scoring a couple of times. The final whistle came just in time for Geelong, saving coach Georgi from blowing a gasket.
Best players for Geelong were; Uki, Kristejan, Georgi, & Costa.
Well done everyone! Next week we play @ Deakin Uni.
