I was appointed senior coach the week of the home game against Sunbury United. We were down 5 nil by half time, not the baptism I had imagined. The team was lacking confidence, organisation and structure.
The following week was spent building confidence and re-organising certain key positions within the team. And with a little luck, hard work and discipline we managed to pick up all three points away to Williamstown. This was just the tonic the team needed as there is nothing like a win to inspire confidence.
In the following week the intensity lifted on the training track, the team showing belief in itself which was previously lacking. We eagerly awaited the visit of our Macedonian rivals Sydenham Park. Sydenham was sitting 3rd on the ladder and travelling well, this was never going to be easy. We were leading one nil with 15 minutes to play and looking good until we conceded 2 late goals (82nd and 95th minute). The loss left the group with a bitter taste in their mouth.
Last weekend saw us travel to Avondale Heights who were sitting 2nd on the ladder. Our task was made more difficult when we lost key players through either injury or personal reasons. Tactically we played with one striker and packed the midfield with six players to make it difficult for our opposition to find openings. The tactic worked, Avondale failed to score. We gladly left the arena with a hard earned point.
The team now sees itself outside the relegation zone, but only just. The players have responded well to the challange in front of them and have no illusions about the enormity of the task ahead of us.
This week the team has a bye and hopefully it will give us the opportunity to get over niggling injuries that some of the squad are carrying and we look forward to having a full list to choose from when we play our next game away to North Sunshine.
Yours in Sport,
