Coach Kit’s match report – GeelongSC 3-1 Melbourne Uni

We welcomed Melbourne Uni to Stead park for our round 15 match which was played in  very heavy conditions. We started well with Matty getting on the score sheet early and putting the UNI boys on the backfoot.

In the 15th minute Suga was brought down in the box and won a penalty. His brother and captain Steve duly converted at the second attempt, his first attempt was ruled out for a GeelongSC player encrouching in the box.

With a  2 goal league we continued to press for a third goal which would have put the game beyond the opposition grasp and also made life more pleasant for the coaching staff. Wishfull thinking, in the 25th minute, for reasons only known to the referee he awarded a penalty to Melbounre Uni as they took a corner. He had obviously seen something no-one else did. Romeo got a hand on spot kick but could’nt keep it out so we went into the break with a slender one goal lead.

The second half started like the first with GeelongSC completely dominating possession but with little reward . Again,  after twenty minutes, Melbourne Uni lifted and looked as if they were going to equalise, but the team defended well and Romeo was again in great form. They just couldn’t break us down.

In the closing minutes, Arco made a great sixty yard run from midfield which ended with their goalkeeper bringing him down. Their keeper recieved a red carded for the foul and we recieved a direct free kick just outside the box. Live-wire striker Matty stepped up and score his second goal of the game with a well taken strike, giving their stand-in keeper no chance.

The team is now beginning to jell and has responded well to the intensity of our trainings, the organisation is excellent and the work ethic within the squad is second to none. We now have a full squad (albeit on the thin side) to pick from, we have no injuries or suspensions and with this attitude we should achieve our original goal of survival.

Our next fixture against Sunbury has been cancelled due to their ground being under water. Our next game is a home fixture against Williamstown.
