Cairnlea were the visitors to Stead park for our round ten match which was played in windy and sometimes wet conditions. We went into this game without our regular striker Matty and sweeper Ivica ,who both had family committments interstate.
Billy Bunce is also a week away with a hamstring injury ,so all going well we should have a full squad available for the next game. Without a regular striker available we played a 3-7-0 formation, strange one might think but Spain have been using this formation on a regular basis with great success.
Midway through the first half, with possession fairly even, Sheldon Jones made a terrific run through the middle finding Terry Mutembua free at the back post for an easy tap in. The half finished 1-0 and it was comforting to go in at the break for a change with a lead.
Both teams shared possession until midway through the 2nd half when Terry doubled his tally breaking free from his marker and rounding the keeper for an excellent strike.
Ten minutes later, we were awarded a penalty which our captain Steve Nikolovski confidently strode up to take, only to blast it against the crossbar to everyone’s dismay. This lifted the visitors, and we were put under much pressure in the last 15 minutes which resulted in them scoring with around 10 minutes left making the score 2-1. We weathered the storm and held out for a deserved 3 points which lifts us out of the bottom 2 and again lifts our confidence.
Behind adversity comes opportunity and it was very pleasing to start the game with 17 year old Kristian Grgic, he made his debut and didn’t let his team mates down. We also had another 2 youth players, Stuart Mandley and Billy Fanraatree who gained some invaluable playing time in the seniors.
These players with the right attitude and commitment have a very bright future at the club.
