Top Spot for Geelong's U17 Boys

The U/17’s had another impressive win on Sunday, easily accounting for Barwon Red 5-0.  It was an excellent all-round team performance as Barwon was left in awe at Geelong’s superior passing game. Geelong had all the answers with coach Dean Brown having a full complement of players allowing wholesale changes across the park that included Harley Fountain starting on the right of midfield. Back from his Spanish debut, Alberto Lopez’s neat cut back found defender turned midfielder Daniel Gray who neatly tucked the ball into the back of the net after 10 minutes.

The second came soon after a Dylan Stojanovski corner was snared by midfielder turned sweeper Shiva Kanapathy who rounded the Barwon defence with ease and slammed a fierce shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner. Barwon’s keeper had his hands full as Geelong continued to dominate possession yet unable convert with a menacing Lopez and Jimmy Vo both coming dangerously close, but none closer than a bullet like free kick from Jordan Rendevski, whose top corner bound drive was spectacularly tipped over the bar.

The second half saw Geelong hit their stride with the boys exchanging a number of passes,  little flicks, back heels and nutmegs reminiscent of Argentina at the World Cup. Several of Barwon’s “David’s” attempted to bring down Geelong’s “Goliath” Jordan Rendevski who was in a goal scoring mood once again, starting his run from just inside Geelong’s half, felling all in his path to bang home the 3rd of the day.

With defenders Michael Ilioski, Michael Dojcinovski, Anthony Nuygan and indeed keeper Shaun Finn having little to do, they could only watch on as a string of passes down the right flank  between Adrian Chu and Stefan Luong found Billy Fanraatree with plenty of space to shoot from distance. Barwon keeper’s horror afternoon continued as Billy’s powerful drive could only be parried to the feet of a fortuitous Alberto Lopez who couldn’t miss the open goal. Jordan Rendevski was rewarded on a fine afternoon’s effort scoring his second in the dying minutes after a short corner kick was fed to his feet again turning his marker inside out to finish in style rounding off a fine team effort.

Back in the change rooms, the result was capped off in the middle of the coach’s post match address with a rare gesture on behalf the Barwon coach congratulating the boy’s efforts, hailing them as “the best side in the competition”.

The result sees the boys back on top of the ladder, still with a game in hand after rivals Lara dropped 3 crucial points to Geelong Rangers going down by 4-2 and next week sees the boys away to Corio in what’s tipped to be a fierce encounter.
