Congratulations to the Under 11 squad for winning the Macedonian Cup for 2014. After easily defeating all three teams – Plenty Valley, Preston & Altona on Saturday, they progressed through in to the finals against the home team Lalor United on Sunday.
Sizing up Lalor’s players had our boys doubting an easy win. Being a close game with some missed chances by Geelong, we ended full time at 0-0.
In the first half of extra time the game was still very tight & ended with no body scoring. Entering the second half of extra time you could see a change in tempo and the look of desperation in both teams was evident. Geelong conceded a corner with a perfect cross & connection by a Geelong player which sent the ball towards the goal – disappointingly being cleared off the line. Extra time had them ended which sent the teams into a penalty shoot out.
With both teams having scored and missed, it came down to Lalor United having to score for the win or a miss to give the championship cup to Geelong. The last shot had missed & just cleared over the cross bar, sending Geelong into hysterics knowing they made it.
A great win & a fantastic effort by all the Under 11 boys.

The second half the conditions changed with warmer and windy conditions. Preston pegged one back with a slick free kick. Extra time loomed and there was no result and went to penalties. The five spot kickers were Kiril, Antony, Oscar, Zac and Kenny. With the three brilliant saves by Dylan, we scored three and we won the penalty shootout (3-2). At the end of the game we found out Dylan played with a black eye for most of the game when he went In for a 50/50 challenge.
With the weather getting warmer and reaching 29, we found out we were meeting Altona Magic in the Grand Final. They looked much stronger than Preston and had much of there team playing in the Under 21s. We loved the challenge and kept with our 4-2-3-1. With Dylan in goals. Kenny, Brandon, Gurby, Alexson in defense. Adrian, Oscar, Javid, Kiril and Antony in midfield and Zac being the lone striker. The wanted this final so bad and we had a burning desire due to two reasons, it was Kiril’s last game for the club and because we came runners up in our local grand final.
We won the toss and played with the wind again. Altona started very strong with there slick and fast tempo where our boys couldn’t adapt and got lost at times. I choose to decide to put pace upfront moving Zac and Javid. We slowly crept into the game and started playing our tempo and style and they didn’t like it one bit. Five minutes before half time Antony smartly dips the ball onto the right side and Kiril dribbles past three and one on one with the keeper and hit it right where the keeper could save it, but Javid comes from nowhere and cooly finished off a goal we deserved.
The second half was a test of our fitness and how strong we were mentally cause we all getting tired and Altona were going all out attack. The defence prevailed and we won the a grand final.
As a coach I’m very proud of what the boys produced on the park that day and for the season we have had. We came runners up in our league, runners up in our league grand final and grand final champions in the Maco Cup. Well done boys, we are all proud.
